View Full Version : How does this tire price sound?

I just got a quote for Kumho Ecsta SPTs + mount & balance for $531. They are 225/45/YR17. TireRack has them for $87 then I would have to pay shipping and get someone to mount & balance them.

Does $531 sound reasonable?

Edit... they just called back and said he has to special order them for an extra $80... then he tried to sell me Nittos :P

$132.75 per tire is pretty steep. $87 + $7 (tax) + $15 (shipping) + $15 (mount/balance) = $124, still cheaper from Tire Rack.

Werd  Plus add the extra $20/tire for the "special order". Yeah, I'm going w/ TireRack.

I saved money buying my Kumho MX's from tirerack...but when I went to mount them some placed wanted to charge me $30 a tire! But if I bought tires from them it would only be like $5 a tire...then he claimed Kumhos were over rated and wanted to sell me some Chinese Nankang trash.

$30 is a rip. Most shops are $20/tire, but you can often haggle it down to $15 if you play your cards right.

Steer clear of Big-O-Tires, though. They jacked my hub centering rings, leaving my car with a massive vibration. It took me a couple of months to figure out that it wasn't wheel balance, no bent wheel, no bent suspension components. I didn't figure it out until I took one of my spare wheels in to America's Tire Company and told them to see if one of my wheels is bent. They asked me if I had hubcentric rings, to which I answered yes, but upon inspection, they found that two of them were missing. Replaced the rings ($10 a pop), and the problem went away.

Also, Big-O-Tires managed to strip a few threads off of my oil pan drain hole, so now I can't use my oil temperature sender. When they told me about it, they tried to tell me that whomever had done it previously had done the damage, and that they weren't responsible for it. BIG-O-TIRES = BAD NEWS.

Dude, it's funny that you mention Big-O... I just went shopping around for one tire, and they were about 20% higher price-wise across the board. The guy was a jerk too. I asked him if they matched prices and he got all pissed. So, I told him I'd be going to America's Tire, who was $40 cheaper!!!

Yeah Big-O sucks Big time. America's Tire is usually always cheaper.

I was gonna say the Tire rack might be the better way to go... i was guessing about 20 x 4 to mount ( i had no idea if you had to pay sales tax or not...)

Also, most tire shops will haggle with you if you bring them the total Tire Rack price, including an estimated mounting cost. It's definitely worth a shot.

when i last got tires, the shop was a Tire Rack Shop. They mounted for free.

I got mine through Creative Autoworks.
But this was for the bfg set. I don't think the gas $ would warrent the savings for you though...

Steer clear of Big-O-Tires, though.
FWIW, I have had very good results with the one in Santa Monica on Lincoln (not that you'd come all the way out here for that, but just for anyone in the area).

Do what I did - go to Discount Tire - tell them the price you found on Tire Rack and they will match it... worked for me.

If they won't match the price, buy them from tire rack and have someone local mount them. I could do it for $495 including tax and mounting, unless you have runflats on it now, then it would be an extra $25 to have a local shop dismount them (my machine won't do it).
If you order them from tire rack , there is no tax, figure on $8/tire s&h and whatever a shop will charge to mount them.

I just did the same, its redirected to discount tire, and the total came to $562
installed. I saved the cart as a pdf Here (http://www.geocities.com/onefastmini/DiscountTire2254517.pdf)
I just noticed their "certificate for free replacement" at $56

one more note, I have found that some tire dealers- noteably the local discount tire- wanted to charge me $30 per tire to dismount(only) runflat tires from a 16" rim. I think that most places are either not equipped for them or feel they can rape us on price because no one else will do it.
