Opinions wanted please. I'm running Falken 615's right now. I've got 215-40's.
If I changed to 225-45's( maybe 40's) I'd gain 1/2" of tread width, but also gain 4 pounds per tire. Would the extra 1/2" of tread be worth the extra weight? And when it all comes down to it am I thinking too much?

Are you changing rim width & offset with the bump up in size?

225/40's will be a tight fit. I am getting ready to try 225/35's...lol

No. 7 1/2" rim.45mm offset. The section width is .2" bigger. And looking back, I was wrong, it's .9" bigger tread width.(215-40/17 vs. 225-45/17) Also the dia. is 1.1" greater.

why not got 225/40/17? there is a better chance it will fit .

225/45 would be a very tall tire, so you will lose a lot of torque at the wheels. If you have an later car but prefer the earlier gear ratios, this might be a good move. I would look at 225/40 to retain something close to your current (and stock) gearing.

That's the thing. When I checked back to see if the 225 was a 40 or 45 series I saw that for a 40 the choices are 215 or 235. And I did think of the gearing. I have an '04 where the stock tires had a 24.3 dia. I don't know if that extra 3/4" dia would make a big difference or not. It might turn out that to use the Falkens I just have to stick with what I'm already using. Also had the thought (if money were no problem) of getting a 16" wheel. They offer a 225 with a 24.7 dia , but it's a 50 series. Am I right in thinking that this would allow for too much sidewall flex?

Street or autocross or track use?

I would think a good stiff 50 series should be fine. The MINI is only ~2500 lbs.

Track use. So the 50 series wouldn't be too bad. Of course the 16" wheels would come with the new found wealth. A 225 would probably need a 7 1/2" wide wheel.Yes? All this considered we go back to the tread width vs. unsprung weight increase.

Wait.....you found wealth? Where?? ;)

Unfortunately that hasn't happened yet.:( I figured that I could afford to dream. Whenever the money comes I'd like to have a well thought out plan of attack. Whenever I get money it burns in my pocket so bad that it has to be spent quick. Don't want to make a hasty decision.:tu: Plan twice/spend once.

LOL, good plan. An additional part of David's job has been "outsourced" :thumbsdow so we are trying to find wealth too.
