Struggling Sales Could Kill the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ

So a car company comes out with a fun and economical car for the enthusiast / tuner community and now no one is buying them or more accurately not enough are buying them ? I've always thought it was a nice little project car and If I was not into my mini I may have had one myself. Now I am reading all sorts of articles such as this one telling of the possible demise of the line. Is this going to go the same way as the Neon SRT ? Get a group of enthusiasts onboard and then make heir projects orphans ?

I've seen a lot of these articles posted over the last year, and to me one thing seems clear. For this car to survive, it will require larger scale updates every 3 years or so. For example, the request for more power would bring in lots of new buyers who previously wouldn't consider one because of their desire for immediate torque. In the Subaru world that's especially unusual, since they're so well known for offering various levels of models like the Impreza or even Forester to satisfy that same craving for turbo power. Instead, they offered an STi accessory catalog car (Series Blue) that nobody was really asking for on what is arguably their sportiest car in the lineup. I've always said I wished they offered a turbo STi version. I probably wouldn't buy it, but others would.

The lack of HP has been the biggest gripe of the car since it's release. Offer more "sport" options at a decent price and just watch the cars leave the lot........IMHO anyway.

In the bigger picture, the sports cars market has become a shrinking zero-sum game.

The aftermarket world was waiting with baited breath for these cars to start to grow in number and many took a chance and came up with a nice group of products in all areas . From a Mfg standpoint seeing all this negative press alluding to a possible end of the line is causing a drop if not complete stoppage of all new product development.
What was going to be a boon to this line was that large numbers would help keep the prices down . The Mini world has always had a problem with that due to relatively low volume when compared to other brands , Honda for example. With the BRZ/FRS numbers even lower than Mini the hope for reasonable aftermarket pricing grows dim .

This .... Everything I have read is everyone is waiting for a more powerful TRD/STi model The base is fine for people looking to get into the car but put a WRX motor in it and have a HUGE following.
