This thread is for posting tools/techniques you use for performing maintenence on your ride. It is also a place to post tools/techniques that don't work so well.

As this thread grows the data will be incorporated into the site (yes the site is on its way) giving credit to those who post good info.

Tools...a good torque wrench and socket set is always a must! And a nice low profile jack for us who owned slammed Mini's :D

I have always used a dial torque wrench, but the one I have is ubber expensive (I got it cheap while in the Navy).

Here is one on Amazon that isn't too expensive.

Rear brake calipers: If you're too cheap to buy the brake caliper tool to push the pistons in, use a big C-clamp. The piston has to turn as it rotates (think of it as a large bolt), so put the C-clamp on it with the threaded shaft part on the piston face (taking care not to damage the rubber boot) and the clamp body on the back of the caliper. Turn it until it tightens up a bit, then slowly work it tighter until the swivel head on the C-clamp binds up. If you feel like you're applying too much force, back it off a little, then try again. With a little bit of finesse, the piston should begin to turn and compress, loosening the clamp and allowing the head to swivel again. Tighten it up again, and it should bind up and turn the piston more easily. Continue this until the piston is fully pushed in, being careful to guide the rubber boot in around the piston without letting it get bunched up.

I actually did this today before work. One thing to add is I had some issues. The left one seemed to be stuck. So I left the C-Clamp on there for a bit then loosened and let it sit for a moment and then tried again and it unstuck and went in smooth. The right one would go in some then stop. I would loosen the C-Clamp an let is sit for a min then tighten up again and it would go in smooth.

I also noted that the right caliper piston dust cover was torn to shreds! I am sure this was done by the dealer since they did the brakes last. They probably let the dust cover twist and then it tore or something.

Also be careful not to pinch the dust cover with the pad... I noticed that my dust cover wanted to kinda bunch up over the piston.

Anyway... it all went smooth. Just had to have patience.

for the rear calipers..................?..............as of now, there is NO repair kit availible........sorry....calipers are only replacable in pairs.....

you can just buy the dust cover and replace it. I doubt there is any damage, but if that piston gets dirty it is probably gonna stick. I cleaned off the piston prior to compressing and will replace the dust cover this weekend.

Ummm.... a T-30 Torx bit is used to take lots of things apart on the Mini. :D

A set of Hex Head sockets is nice too. 7mm for brakes calipers. Can't really do proper torque with an allen wrench ;)

I use a Husky torque wrench... It was about $80 at Home Depot... Works well.

I cheapened out and got a torque wrench at Harbor Freight for $12.99...I only use that one for the wheel lugs however. I have a nice craftsman one I'll use for other things that need to be torqued down.

  • Break the tape on a cardboard box with ease.
  • Use the tip to remove the child safety on a Bic lighter (put it in the flame hole and push the safety up and out, then bend the two little tabs back down)

I tried the handy C-clamp on the rear caliper. It worked so well a few years ago on a Nissan I used to own. They wouldn't budge..tried everything including appropriate language. Finally called the local Harbour Frieght store to see if they had the Caliper tool Set in stock. Yes and it was 50% off.
The best $20 I've spent. Oh,..and my right dust boot is torn. Dealer last to touch.:confused:

Also Motive Power Bleeder. Great to have. Makes bleeding brakes a dream.

I had to replace pads about 2 months ago. I was still under the factory maintanence period but I was fed up with brake dust. I called Auto Zone parts store. They will rent the caliper tool for $30 and when you return it they give you your $30 back. If you want to keep it for $30 you can. I figure no more often than I will replace rear pads, I'll just rent it.

Amazon.com has the Bentley manuals for our whips for the relatively low sum of ~$56 delivered. I read of lower prices for the manual here & elsewhere, but after investigating a bunch of dead-ends and non-current pricing found Amazon to be about the cheapest (tax free for many and free shipping over $50).

Thought I'd pass the word in case anybody else was searching for this particular manual.

If you want to buy one, Mini Mania has one. I am planning on getting this for myself this spring, as I am no longer going to the dealership for service intervals, etc.

Also, a nylon pry stick, found it VERY useful when taking off door panels, dash parts, center consol sections, etc. No scratches, saved the fingers from a bunch of crushing and scrapes.

PS...BlwnAway,did you used to own a Passat? Years ago, I knew someone with a screen name like that on a forum for Passats.

I'm currently having issues finding the proper impact wrench/compressor combo...I just had new tires put on tuesday, and the shop torqued my lugs to the point I can't get them off by hand, including using a breaker bar. I decided to pick up a compressor/wrench, since it's something I've been meaning to do. First compressor was a 2gal, 2.7 scfm at 90 psi, wrench is a 340lb.ft craftsman special...needless to say I still couldn't get the lugs off. Took the compressor back and picked up a 15 gal, 4.9 scfm at 40psi, same impact wrench...still can't get them to budge.

My question is am I still too low in power? Or is it because the lugs are just soooo over torqued the only way to get them off would be to use whatever professional grade tools the shop used? Thanks in advance, at worst I guess I'll go to the shop tomorrow AM and bitch.

I would recommend taking it back either way...

"if" they messed something up with that much over-torquing, having them work on it will give you more proof than your word... and make sure the "manager" knows about it.

usually if i cant get lugs off with my air wrench, my 1'6" ratchet does just fine with some elbow grease. if not, aquire some heavy piping and just slip it over the ratchet, that usually works as a good lever.

where it gets confusing is I've had the same problem twice from my MINI dealer too, the second time when I did complain and told them to retorque them properly...maybe I need to to more pushups or something :)

The only reason why I don't think it's just because I am weak is I've snapped 3 lock keys trying to get them off...so I dunno.

with an impact wrench it is all about the CFM and at what pressure. Even a 15 gal compressor is at the very low end for an effective use of an impact wrench. I would suggest a 25 gal with 5+ CFM at about 90psi. There are some in the 25-30 gal range with wheels that make them nice to roll around.

Also, if those lugs are over tightened that bad you probably want to replace them.

here's a tip, get 2 2x4's or 2x6's, drive on to them, then slide the jack under the jackpoint ;)
