That was full on me my first time out. My buddy took me for a 12 mile ride of which the first 6 miles was all up hill and I hadn't been on a bike in over 10 years.

I never quit but I was dying...

No not yet. Rode Cottonwood though, and it almost killed me, but that was my very first time out on a rental bike riding with a friend that is very advanced.

Most of the terrain around me is XC stuff so there is a decent amount of climbing. As a result I wanted to get get something with decent components and as light as possible for under $1,000....

I think 80% of my riding will be outside my door in the desert. Its a mix of small but some times steep hills and dirt trails with the rocky to hard back dirt.
