Yeah stay away from a 2002-2004 Cooper (non S) with a manual trans. The transmissions are prone to fail. After 2005 the Cooper came with a slightly better trans, but it still has issues. What ever you do DO NOT buy an automatic Cooper.

A good starting point would be a 2004 and up Cooper S. All the bugs are worked out and in 2005 there was a slight bump in power (168hp vs. 163hp) and a limited slip diff became an option.

Buy the best MINI you can afford. Low miles are great and if it is in a newer car the better.

Stating in 2007 the second generation MINI was made available. Both the Cooper and Cooper S are good buys. The Cooper S is now turbocharged as opposed to the first generation of supercharged S's.

Take a look around the Lineup and the Garage sections here on m|u to get a taste of what one can do to these cars.

Welcome! Listen to Chase. He knows what he's talking about. Minneapolis, right? Lots of MINI owners out there from what I understand.

Sorry, I think that's the first time I've seen Chase get accused of that.
My advice would be an 05 or newer.
