Default Rattle in Neutral

So Hank (my car) has been making this rattling noise when he's in neutral... when the clutch is depressed, the noise goes away. He's also difficult to put into 1st gear occasionally. I've been told its possibly the throw out bearing or a fly wheel? Anyone have any other thoughts? I'm taking him to the dealer today, and I want as much info as possible.

Sounds like the clutch release bearing. Happened on my old MINI Cooper S and had the clutch replaced at the same time under warranty.
Quite common over here in the UK, we did loads when i worked for MINI, so i would have thought its the same with you guys n gals

Mine's been doin' it almost since day one. I never thought anything of it, and it hasn't gotten any worse ever since. Do I have to worry about something failing in the near future?

I dunno... I'll let you know what the diagnosis is when I get him back. He's at the dealer right now...

In other news, they gave me a hyper blue cabrio loaner. I drove to work with the top down... I am glad I got a coupe, but the convertible sure is nice!!!

I was told by my MINI mechanic, who is one of the best around (his MINI rules! Pro autoxer!) that we have pretty noisey pressure plates, just FYI. I thought my throwout bearing was going bad, but he said it was ok. 13K miles later, no problem at all.

Y'know, I think I heard that from someone before. Someone had their throwout bearing replaced, only to find that it wasn't the throwout bearing at all, just a noisy pressure plate/clutch/flywheel assembly.

I know there is a service bulletin for this. I have a copy of it at work. I will post it tomorrow or you can look it up on alldata.

Try this link. Aplies to 5 speeds, but maybe it will work for 6.

yeah I've heard of this a few times before too... Depending on the shop they may replace the whole clutch or just the throwout bearing or the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing and even the whole transmission assembly a few times. it definately seems to be common... but that doesn't mean it's not something to have checked out and replaced. I suspect that they'll replace some stuff just to be sure... how many miles are on Hank now?
