Question Engine quit @ 6500 rpm

Pulling around a roadblock I accelerated in third gear. When I reached 6500 rpm (I was watching the tach), the engine quit and the check engine light came on. There was no throttle resonse. Almost stopped, I could hear that the engine was still running, but it sounded like only 2 cylinders and it would not respond to the throttle. I nursed it along at 20 mph in third for awhile, then turned off the key and tried to restart it, hoping to reboot the ECU. 4 cylinder response returned, but the check engine light remains on.

So what happened? Did it do the equivalent of a MS bluescreen of death and then responded to the reboot? I need one of those diagnostic programs for my PC that reads the OBD, don't I. I'm way out in the desert at Willow Springs Raceway. Track day tomorrow. Now what?

i took it in for service. it was a sticky bypass valve. had to be replaced... basically I could never take it close to redline or this would happen EVERYTIME.

someone else had this problem too, but it only happened once and never again.

there are also some people who have had problems with throttle body upgrades.

are you still running a stock TB? if you're still running stock, I'd say it's the bypass valve

It could be the bypass like mentioned before. If that is the case you can still run but you will have to mod the bypass by tying it shut. Get a piece of safety wire and wire the valve shut and it should work. ( secure the linkage so its in the closed position. ) If its the throttle body then thats a different story. I have a code scanner but that is of little help to you now since you are in willow and I am by LAX. I would be happy to read and clear the codes for you when you come back to town.

Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out so you can run. And dont really sweat the light being on that light comes on for some petty things some times. I ran for 2 days at streets of willow with the light on...no worries.

UPDATE:

Everything worked out ok today. Jerry's MINI was functioning fine this morning, so the offering's to the MINI Gods appeared to have worked.

He ran the track day today with myself, MadHatter, and Jackarat. The power steering went out on Jackarat's MCS for a bit, but other than that the MINIs ran cleanly today.

I had it happen once to me....

126mph headed east..

just past a semi and the car went into "limp home" mode..

Made it to the side of the road and let it sit for a couple of minutes, while I tried to rationalize what had just happened.

Drove around America's playground for a couple of days before I could get to a scanner. The light went off after 5 re-cycles of the car.

The code came back as a throttle postion issue. This was on a stock TB.

So far, Knock on Wood, the problem has not come back.

Best I can figure it was some kind of fuel problem. I fed it some inferior gas in the morning and it was close to empty when the incident ocurred so maybe that was it. The check engine light didn't come on this morning, and I had it up over the redline with no deleterious effects today on the track.

Thanks for your concern, but it all worked out. next time I'm in for service I'll get a OBD-II readout and see what it says.

Yeah, it sounds like it went into limp-home mode. A lot of things can cause that to happen, so definitely get your hands on an OBD-II code reader to make sure you pinpoint the cause, lest the next thrown code be your engine's last. *knockonwood*

If it is, it would be a good excuse for an upgrade. Can you say Exige?
