Default GTI or WRX

Well guys, the Mini has been great fun and still is, but some time next year I will probably be looking at getting a second car for day to day use. Budget aside, I am looking for this in a car:

- 4 doors
- 4 or 5 seats
- preferably hatch back
- manual
- fun

Originally I was thinking of a VW Polo but it is a wee bit small. Apparently the Polo isn't available in the USA.

The VW Golf 1.4L twincharged (aka 118tsi) was another alternative but engine and supercharger clutch issues are a turn off.

So that leaves me at these two...

OR

WRX 2011 Hatch

What would you prefer out of these two? I have driven a 2011 WRX and $hit was it fantastic. Yet to drive a GTI yet but I hear good things about them as well. All reviews I have read seem to flop between the two with no real winner. Right now if I had those two cars in front of me and said pick one, I would not be able to. They retail for roughly the same price here so that isn't a deciding factor.

I have looked at tonnes of other makes and models but nothing tickles my fancy like the ones above.

Subaru all the way for me. That car is fun, fast, and makes all the right noises. Don't get me wrong the GTI is great too. But if it's one or the other, WRX.

What do you want from your car?

Performance?
Luxury?
Features?
Gas Mileage?

If you want something fun to drive that feels like a "nice" car for the daily commute, get the GTI. If you're more focused on performance with the sacrifice of luxury, get the WRX.

Yeah those points I have a bit of trouble answering to be honest. Really it is something I want to have for 5 or so years, use as the stereotypical grocery getter, but also something that I could take on a road trip or the like.

Performance: I want power when I put my foot down, but I never go to the track so high end performance is not what I am after.

Luxury: Yes to an extent. However I do a bit of wakeboarding/kitesurfing and going to the beach so I don't want to be afraid to put stuff in the trunk if it is a bit wet/ sandy. Leather seats are not what I would be after either.

Features: Nice to have but as long as I have bluetooth, ipod input, controls on the steering wheel Ill be happy. Been here for 8 years so a Nav screen is unnecessary.

Gas Mileage: I catch the train to and from work so it will be mainly used for errands, zipping over to mates places, road trips, etc. Not stuck in traffic day in day out.

I think I need to take the GTI for a test drive. Although the 6 month wait for ordering one could be annoying.

Haha... in Australia that is out of the question.

WRX Retail: $44,104

STI Retail: $65,384

Then when you factor in interests rates of 7% or more stuff gets expensive.

Hey Ben, I found the WRX very bland inside - sure it's a rocket, but not luxury

It sounds like you would enjoy the GTI more in the long run to me, but I might be wrong. The fit & finish, features, simple but useful interior, and overall experience make it a great choice. The WRX is a great car too, but the performance side is more important than the fit & finish are with that car, so you have to decide which matters more to you.

WRX all the way. Doubt you get much snow down there but anyone that lives where there's snow should try to find a way to drive one in the snow... as much as you can with your pants on.
