The alternator broke on me recently. That's the original alternator from the factory 15 years ago. For the last year or so, I was thinking the engine was making an awful lot of strange noises. I was thinking valves, worn cylinder rings, maybe supercharger, waterpump etc...

But then the alternator gave up the ghost...while driving. I still have a car that does not have power steering so it was not a big deal when I lost power steering due to the the car running strictly on battery until I could find a safe place to pull over and get catch a bus to work.

Anyways, I had the alternator replaced and a belt tensioner and belt installed at the same time since that part of the car was opened up anyways.

The engine runs like new again. Smooth and quiet. No strange rattles.

That's the 05 on the left in my sig pic 17,000 miles before I gave it to my mini mechanic friend for free (it was at his place quite a bit near the end anyway). The one on the right he got at 171,000. Both are miles.

Pfft.. Rookie numbers, y'all.

I know there are plenty of others out there with many more miles, but still very proud to be at the 200k+ club. Also, this is with a 4-year hiatus. I use that as an excuse almost daily now... lol.

Keep motorin'.

That's most excellent, you guys. I started driving in 1978. My R53 MCS has been the most reliable and fun to drive car bar none.

Favorite powertrain would be the slant-6 motor in my 1966 Valiant. It was the most smooth and made great usable power reasonably economically.

Worst motor, the GM aluminum block they put in the Chevy Vega/Pontiac Astre But my Pontiac Astre was the most easily serviceable

Least reliable car, 1999 Buick Century. Even my mechanic neighbor who works for GM says he can't believe GM put that motor into production and sold it. They have so much trouble with them.

I read a rumor somewhere that once it hits 300000, it stops reminding me to get oil changes or no longer allows me to reset the oil change indicator. I'm curious whether or not that rumor is true.

That would be a lot of effort to do programming wise and for no gain really, doubtful - but I suspect you'll find out! :-)
