Default Westcoast roadtrip

Hi guys,

I'll be heading to the US of A with 3 friends in September.
We're landing in Las Vegas on 7th Sept at 11pm or something.
Our ride, a Dodge Caravan, will be available from the next day.
Departure foreseen on 28th Sept at 8:30am at LAX.

We are doing LV - SF - LA, we have our flights and we have our ride. That's all.

Every suggestion you guys have, is welcome. My friends are (unfortunately) not petrolheads. They like cars, but not as much as you & me do

Also, any nice places to stay are welcome as well!

Thanks!

Did a comparable trip in 2010, here's a small write-up (in Dutch) with some pics: http://www.autoblog.nl/archive/2011/...ornian-corners

So, here's our program so far.
We're going to take our time down the West Coast but we don't know yet where we'll be staying. That's why there are question marks.
Also, when in San Diego we'll might hop the border to Tijuana.

Don't know if there are any nice events to do when we're in the aera?

Any suggestions are welcome

Whatever you do, don't stay in the tent-like cabins in Yosemite village. Biggest rip-off I ever encountered!

EDIT: in SF do the Alcatraz-audio-tour, it's really good, with actual ex-convicts telling part of the story. Booking in advance is advised, we got lucky while queuing thanks to someone with some sick family members.

I was just in San Fran this month and loved it.

If you like garlic, I suggest the The Stinking Rose. We loved it. The restaurant motto is "We Season Our Garlic With Food!"

We also ate at Scoma's, It was a little more than I wanted to spend (I had surf and turf), The Lobster was perfect and the Filet was AMAZING.

We took 2 different tours.

The Big Bus tour was good because you buy a 24 or 48 hour pass and can get on and off at any of the 20 stops. they have buses come about ever 20 mins so if you jump off to do something you can catch the next one soon. the buses alternate from a pre-recorded audio tour to a live person. The live person was better in our opinion. And remember, it is COLD on top of that bus going over the golden gate bridge.

The Duck tour was also great. Capt. Rodgers has a great personality and makes the tour really fun. You do see a lot of the same things that you can on the other tour, but you get some more things out of it. Capt. Rodgers was our capt/tour guide. He has a great personality and makes the trip fun. They also let you drive the duck a little in when you are in the water.

+1 I've done it twice , makes you not want to even speed , at least for awhile

Your L.A dates do not really hit while there is a lot going on as far as shows etc. in my area but the Malibu local is still worth checking out both site seeing and road wise .

Stay in Big Sur for a night on your way down to SB!

See the dog mermaids in San Simeon

eat some chocolate covered scorpions in Pismo

There is currently a car show happening in our driveway if you stop through Ventura.

Yeah there's no better drive than around Big Sur. I wish I'd had my Mini last year when I did that road trip up the coast to Big Sur. I have to do it again soon to really enjoy those roads. I stayed at Glen Oaks Big Sur. It was fantastic and very unique.

Thanks! I'll see to it that we stay in Big Sur Unfortunately, a Dodge Caravan won't be the most exciting car to ride there either
