Thumbs up I had a moment tonight...

The good kind. Cars, turns, a little speed, and fun...

So, I've followed this bloke in a fire engine red GTO home two nights in a row now. A brand new-'ish '06 Pontiac GTO - 6.0 liters of pretty damn cool hardware in my book.

It rocks.

That said, I know I'll never come close to showing my heels to one in a straight line. Still, the competitive natured car nerd that I am made me antagonize this fellow slightly to see if he'd awaken the soul of the GTO and clean my clock.

Just like last night (grasshopper learn quickly and observe well), the GTO driver accelerates to warp 2 to merge out from a turn only lane. Accelerating quickly with me in tow, we zip past a lane of commuter traffic less inclined to enjoy the road ahead after a red light. It is apparent 8 cylinders and ~300HP trumps my 'Coop's tiny 4 cylinder with a blower on it.

Noticing me, the mosquito, somewhat keeping up the driver to buries the GTO's throttle. As I watch this beast of a car rumble ahead of me, I realize a few things. 90mph in a 40mph zone is pretty fast, OEM 16" Dunflop tires really do suck, and I am not as far behind the GTO as I thought I'd be.

We soon temper things down as the road reveals traffic and less suitable driving conditions.

After clearing some of the roadway clutter and stooges we find ourselves making a lefty onto a bit of clear road and the GTO squirts ahead. I catch up just in time to set a 90 degree right with pretty damn good execution. GTO takes the turn, oozes over to the left lane after turning, and I remain in the right lane post turn. The GTO accelerates hard, but somehow I managed to keep second gear on tap and using every ounce of horsepower actually glue myself all over the tail of the GTO.

One could hear the V8 come to life but for that fleeting moment he was mine. Unable to escape the buzz of my supercharger and my more properly calculated lines, the GTO driver fumbled to find a better line and more juice under his foot.

Nice. I made a GTO driver squirm...

We proceeded to blast up a nice set of curves to find more traffic that demanded attention and slower speeds. A couple of turns later we went separate ways with a honk & wave.

Not to condone speeding , but moments like this really make me realize/appreciate how much fun it is to motor in a MINI. A classic David and Goliath moment where the MINI certainly proved capable. Also nice to encounter another driver with a bit of passion for the asphalt and a non-NASCAR attitude.

Damn I need some track time. And some better tires for summer fun.

Had to share it somewhere, so I thought why not here at the μ...

Default It was fun,

but of course I now have to keep a watchful eye on the rearview mirror in case the GTO driver sets his sights on me (and wants to prove he can clean my clock)...
