Default 2016 Mazda Miata

With the 4th generation of the Miata, Mazda has been forced to find ways to improve on what many consider the ultimate driver's car. No, it doesn't offer gobs of tire smoking torque. No, it won't do well in a drag race against, well, a lot of cars. But when it comes to the overall driving experience and fun to drive character there isn't much that has beat it over the years.

As someone who has owned three Miatas in the past, a 1990, 1993, and 2001, I'm excited to see the newest version that has just been released. The NA and NB body style were very similar cars, and they won over lots of enthusiasts with their light weight and excellent driving dynamics. The NC was a true overhaul, and though I've never owned one, I've driven a few and always felt they were a great 3rd generation car.

Now, for the fourth round, the ND promises to be even lighter than the current car and will likely offer plenty of the character Miata owners have come to love. Considering how many people on this site own or have owned Miatas I'd love to hear everyone's opinions on the new one.

Stats aren't really available yet, but the pictures tell a lot. Personally, I love the new look. It's a more attractive car, the interior looks more modern yet still sticks to the basics, and the look of the big grill finally seems right with the smaller, more aggressive headlights. I actually wonder if the style is finally bold enough to remove the stigma that the Miata has always had in the past. Either way, here are the pics. What are your thoughts?

FINALLY.

Looks awesome too, crap.

It looks like the top will retract into the trunk this time unless I just can't see the compartment from that angle.

No, it's just like on the last one where the soft top will drop into the area right behind the seats and makes its own tonneau cover.

I held out as long as I could but got fed up with them delaying it. I would have gladly bought it.

The first car I thought it resembled was the Panoz Esperante Spyder. I guess that's the thing with car design anymore. You either truly do something out of the norm to make it not look like anything else, or it's going to look like other cars. I was a bit surprised to see the similar tail light design to the F-type, but as a whole I think it ended up as a really good looking car. The original Miata was designed with european classic roadsters in mind, so I guess they stuck with the same theme with the influence on this one... just a bit more modern.

It's going to be hard for the dealers to move the old Miata's off the lot now that the pictures of the new gen are out.

Dealers will probably have to add a markup for a while to cover their losses....

Yeah, you'd be a fool to buy an NC now that you know what the ND looks like.

Well, you'd have to be a fool to buy an NC anyways, even if these pics weren't out. lol

That's always what people say, but there will be a select crowd that don't like the new one as much. Another crowd of buyers will have no idea they've even released the 2016 design. And then there's always the impulse buyers and people who need a car now, not in 8-12 months. I doubt Mazda produced a ton of the late 2014/2015 Miatas to make sure they don't end up with a huge inventory.
