Default Benito Abarth

After someone at work offered to buy the GTO from me, I was able to start looking for a new toy.

I looked for an R53 for about 6 months but couldn't find anything rust free with low miles. I drove an FR-S and a BRZ but I would just buy another Miata before I spent $30k on one of those twins. The Fiesta ST was still half a year away (and the interior is pretty bad). The Sonic RS isn't worth what they're asking for it. The rest of the hot hatches are pretty much appearance packages. So that left FIAT.

I was on the way to the MINI dealership to try and get financing for a $33k Clubman JCW when the wife suggested we stop at FIAT just to cover all the bases. Sure, why not? And about 20 minutes later...

The shift boot was gone after about day three. Redlinegoods made me a nice new one that matches the stitching on the seats and steering wheel.

Then I lowered it a bit.

So how do you like the interior? Does it feel overly cheap compared to the MINI?

If you boil it all down to ONLY the quality of materials, the R56 and the Abarth are about the same. The door panels on the Abarth are hard plastic, which kind of sucks. The rest of the interior is fantastic. The base 500's have a bit of a problem with hard plastics all over but the fit and finish of all the models is comparable to the MINI.

The R53 has a better interior all around IMO. But if you had to put the Abarth up against the 2nd gen MINI interior, the style of the FIAT dash and seats is much better.

None of the MINIs had as nice of an interior as the 05-06 R53.

Holy crap. Is that where we are with R53s?? Are you just talking about the door sills or other parts of the car?

Yeah, i'm afraid it is. I looked at about a dozen cars that I found on used car lots, eBay and Craigslist.

All of them were over my mileage limit (60k) and all of them had rust under the tail lights. Some of them were worse. Some had rust around the hatch handle, some had rust spots on the hood. Most of them had crappy options. Lots of Crono packs, lots of Cordoba Beige. Ick. I'd kill for another car like my EB R53. I have no idea who optioned some of these cars. Stupidest shit. Nav but no fog lights, Liquid Yellow and Cordoba Beige, wtf man?

I'm afraid my last resort for an R53 will end up being a GP. Most of them were taken pretty well care of I just didn't want to spend $25k for a 6 year old car.

Some of the plans include...

Center exit exhaust. They sell a carbon fiber replacement that has the stock dual outlets filled, but I don't like the carbon fiber on this color car and the price is absurd. So I will but another valence and fill the holes myself.

This front lip (ACS Cavallino) and the hood vents from the Asetto Corse car.

A piggyback ECU, short throw, I need to make an engine cover to replace the stock airbox I removed with the CAI. Plenty of stuff to keep me busy in spring!

Thinking about coilovers, sway bars and a set of sticky tires still.

19% pulley and everything

The plans all look great. I didn't know such cool parts were available for these. Part of me still wants to get one some day.

I found this little thing the other day. I'm not 100% sold yet but I think I like it.

Yeah I like that... I think. Hard to picture it on the car.

I really need to get around to test driving one of these.
