Default Would you buy this $20 helmet?

[note: i swear there was a "helmets" thread on this forum once, but can't find it.]

This is a two-part question:

part one: would you buy this (or any) $20 helmet?*
part two: where can a guy get a good deal on a helmet that isn't eBay?

what's it for? don't think it will pass for any trackday or autoX (snell approved?)

personally if I'm wearing a helmet it's going to be a good one! got my Vega from one of the race/SOLO catalogs; was under $200 and approved for all SOLO uses and/or trackdays (no HANS points on it though)

and if it's for a bike I'd definitely want more than a $20 brain bucket! just my opinion anyway.....

Yeeeeeah. I'd say no go.

DOT really isn't much of a cert these days (and easily ripped off). Snell ratings are more conclusive and proper.

Absolutely not.

http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/...k--649881.html

That's what I bought. Incredibly comfortable, and affordable. SNELL approved and absolutely the best decision I ever made.

Ask yourself a few things:

1) What does the helmet need to do? Riding a bicycle on a trail? That might be safe enough. On the street where cars come at you at 45+ speeds? no thanks.

2) Is your brain worth $20? I'd venture to say if you could buy insurance on your brain you'd probably take out a little bit higher policy.

At that price it is most likely made in China with a faked DOT cert and it is more than likely older than a 1990 or 2000 certification/manufacture date. Either way I would not touch it. Most driving organizations would not approve anything that old.

"If you have a $20 dollar brain, buy a $20 helmet." To steal a line from a Bell commercial from the late 1960s or early 1970s.

The thread you were looking for is here:
http://www.motoringunderground.com/f...read.php?t=504

I went with a Pyrotect SNELL SA 2005 helmet...
I bought from www.extremesupply.com and they did need a little help with international orders at first, but after that everything else went smoothly.

Thanks for the comments/resources folks- i was distracted from here for a couple days.

FYI- the sole purpose of a $20 helmet would be to transport from point A to point B, a helmet-requiring vehicle that may or may not be resold within a fortnight.

No way I'd put my cranium in the trust of a 20$ helmet, but that's just me.

My investment was based on the fact that I know I could be hit by a dumbass at any second. So the whole A-B thing doesn't really change my mind. Plus, you'll be buying an investment that you can KEEP for the future. Should that fortnight be extended.
