Ok this is a little of topic but not really: How bad is it to run a pulley(either alta 15% or M7 16%) with the stock ecu? I've heard differant opinions. Some say it's ok and some say don't do it because it's really bad for the car. I would imagine that it is BETTER to get a unichip or MTH with a pulley but is it really nessecary? I'm mostly taking about for the cars health, not just performance. Ivan your using the stock ecu, right?

Mine seems to be running fine with the stock ECU. The car runs pig rich as is, and the ECU is mapped to maintain that level of richness by monitoring the oxygen sensors, so unless you're using something more aggressive than a 16% pulley or adding tons of other mods that could lean out the mixture, I don't see a problem with it.

Is there any way you can tell for sure that you need to redo the ecu? Is it anything past a catback, pulley and intake? Or is it once you car starts running like shit?

Well, if your ECU detects knocking, it'll retard timing and light up the Check Engine light. As long as that light isn't on, I don't think you'll have a problem, aside from maaaybe some driveability issues.

Default Runs fine

I haven't had a chance to make a run in the MINI since the pulley instal because I've been riding dirt bikes the past few days and I just got back from the desert today. But if the short trip from Steve's is any indication of things to come I'm sure I'll love it!
Steve mentioned that he thought my harmonic balancer was bad (he said the early 05's had some isues and that the dealer would take care of it) - has anyone else heard that? I guess when he test drove my car he heard something...but I can't notice it - I guess that's what makes him so good

Default I've heard knocking

IDIAZ - I've heard knocking a few times now (usually while accelerating in a high gear while already rolling) I use high octane...what gives? Should I use a cooler plug?

BTW: That noise Steve heard I heard this morning when I finally got out in the MIni..I didn't think it was from the balancer because it only happened on initial acceleration> Anyway, I found that the motor Mount hadn't been properly tightened...glad I looked under the hood - it was easy to fix, the guy must not have remembered to go back - the mount has a top nut and a side brace...it was that bolt that was left loose.

Car pulls super strong, and the sound is cool!!!!

Lats,

Huh. Y'sure that "knocking" wasn't coming from the motor mount? Was it accompanied by a loss in power?

The mount was making a grinding / clicking sound on initial acceleration - the knocking I hear is from the motor like detonating (or pinging) - I've heard plenty of engine knock in my life in various cars and trucks.... so I know that's what I'm hearing...no loss of power - just under rolling accelerations in higher gears like 4th or 5th - like I'm running low octane gas, but I have only used 91 - and I use always Shell or Citgo....

do you think a lower heat range plug would make it run without knocking?
