Default Dampener life

I was curious as to the life of springs and struts. As stated in the other thread I am looking at putting some springs in to lower my MINI. After talking with many individuals and business, I am told I should change my struts at the same time to save time because lower springs will wear my struts out quicker. My question is, when should one replace there struts and shocks for regular mantinace.

I was searched and found this link http://news.carjunky.com/car_mainten...d_struts.shtml
Any other ideas?

Rull of thumb is 50K miles...but I'm sure thats with factory springs not stiffer aftermarket springs. I had Tein springs on my Cooper and the factory struts and shocks felt pretty bad at about 55K miles. I drove my car hard however, it may last longer depending on your springs and how you drive your car.

IMO, save up until you can afford a good set of aftermarket struts and shocks and swap them when you do you're springs. You'll notice a better performance gain because the factory shocks weren't designed with stiffer aftermarket springs in mind.

That is what everyone is adding, especially once they realize my 03 has almost 60k on it. I guess I will be patient, and run the MCS 4x4 look for a while.

That's a great idea, save up the money, then one day, dump it using which ever method you want springs or colils!

Mine werent TOTALLY shot when i took them off....but they were bad. I couldnt have had that many miles on them...i dont even have 41k on my car yet. I would say i had my H&R's on for probably 28K and they were showing signs of being squishy

This makes me wonder what the MINI should handle like. I haven't driven one with low miles or fresh components.

Rolling stock is fine I am now and have been for about a year. Its the smaller profile thats going to affect the wheel gap that I am worried about.

Glad I know you wont rag on me, for this.

Yah....when i took them off they were pretty shot. It was a 2002 model which had the old style struts though....so that might be part of it? The struts were then changed in 2003 i believe

What are the roads like in your area, and how aggressively do you drive?

I'd say 40k for harsh road conditions and hard cornering, 60k for smooth roads and conservative driving. Definitely consider swapping your dampers out if you're going to lower the car, as they're designed to work within the stroke provided by the stock springs. Lowering them WILL make them bottom out more, shortening their life considerably.
