the key is to bend the cable away from you towards the latch so that it will curl back under to the catch. I thought I dislocated my shoulder trying it the first time before I realized I needed to introduce that bend in.

Help! I just spent the last 30 minutes trying to get the armrest off and couldn't even get that done. The armrest is so secure against the center bar that I could barely get anything under it. When I finally did, nothing released and all I succeeded in doing was stripping the tape off the screwdriver. Took two hands worth of force just to get the screwdriver under the armrest...I was sure I was going to break something so I stopped.

What's the trick?

Just to prove you cant believe everything you read in magazines, modern MINI say you need to remove the glass from the door to change the handles and it takes 3 hours to do both sides.... what a load of ****

Never mind...I finally got it. Took 2 hrs to do the passenger side. That included a run to Autozone to get a Torx Allen wrench set, 20+ minutes on the armrest, and 20 minutes on getting the cable from the new handle into the piece parts. Whew. Now I get to do it again on the driver side...tomorrow or next week, I need a rest!

Thanks for the write up

My '05 only had 2 allen screws on each side ... but I'm not complaining! There really is no easy way to do this job unless your very tiny or some kinda yoga master! I'd like to see the tool the factory uses to install these bolts!

Now, breaks over. I still have to go put the new handles back on

why the hell did MINI torture me with 3 screws?!

i think the tool they use at the factory is a custom allen key. a really long one that goes thru the plugged holes. i dunno

glad you got em off. have fun putting the jenga like puzzle of the cable back on! jk, it's not THAT bad
