Oh crap, the stories I could tell you! HAHA I have so many of them.. 11 years of being a Labor and Delivery nurse you see MORE THAN YOUR FAIR SHARE of things!

As for the doorknob, I am assuming this woman was elderly, with very delicate skin. As we age, our skin becomes more like tissue paper, so almost anything could go through it.
I am still trying to imagine it tho..

She was, I didn't check the PCR for her exact age, but I'd guess in the mid 70s. Her daughter seemed about 40ish so it makes sense.

She musta went down like a sack of potatoes though.

Yep. The one and only. Love some of the weird stuff we get there. Got one day I refer to as the "day of glass"...6pmish, get a woman who broke up a wine glass and ingested it in a suicide attempt...11pmish, guy with a lightbulb you know where, and it wasn't Uncle Fester style...

From one night two months ago, over the course of 3hrs->450lb female motor vehicle accident, comes in with massive internal bleeding from transected portal vein probably from her seatbelt and a 25cm scalp laceration from forehead to occiput. An hour or so later we get a call for a "perirectal" abscess, usually a routine thing. First notion that it wasn't routine was how the whole ER smelled like rotten cabbage and fruit juice. Ends up the guys whole left but cheek was dead with air underneath the skin from the bacteria growing in it. He lost the whole cheek down to the bone. Fun times.

You still thinking of doing the med school thing?

Nah, no med school for me. Stony Brook pre-med beat the inspiration out of me. I do plan to end up a paramedic though once I finish my Masters in teaching.

Nice, Level 1 trauma. I haven't had to Medevac anyone yet but when I do, they are coming your way.

The occiput is basically the back of the head Griff. It's quite the laceration

On one of the units I worked, ALL OB-GYN calls came to our triage, pregnant or not.

So I had one patient who came in in extreme pain stating that it hurt so bad to pee, yet she had to all the time. So in taking her history, of course we were thinking just a bladder infection, etc.. So we didn't even think to ask about what kind of birth control she uses.. Why would that have anything to do with this..
So after all the lab tests came back and she was in 9/10 pain, we got an ultrasound.. Maybe some huge stones or something..
So we get a call from the tech stating that she needed the Doc down there to see what she was seeing... So the OB and the Radiologist went in looking at what was going on..
The OB came back up laughing her a$$ off. This stupid girl SOMEHOW inserted a nuvaring into her bladder...

Just as a frame of reference.. here's a picture

So you can see in comparison to that hand, just how thick and large it is.....

WTF!?!? I agree with Wanderer. That's unbelievable. And it took some serious effort and pain to do so.

umm, yeah! For sure. I asked her how she did it.. and did it hurt.. I mean, I'm sorry, but there is a BIG difference in the size of the place she put it in, and the place it was supposed to go!
Yes, she said it hurt, but she really thought that it was just an acceptable amount of pain... So I asked her, well, does it hurt to have sex? and she looked at me and was like... uh.. no... and I said, well then WHY WOULD THIS HURT???

WTF! Really!? I used the nuvaring for years and I have no idea how someone would push it into their bladder.

Basically the guy probably did have a perirectal abscess (which is basically just a large zit coming off the rectum) for a long time, and the bacteria just took over and consumed his entire fat and muscles. The skin somehow managed to stay intact and just seal it off. He seemed to have other issues which likely lead to ignoring it; in fact his chief complaint was a fever and the butt thing was found after investigating the smell.
