Default Dubs... MKV GLI vs. GTI

Just tossing arounds ideas. I thought it might be interesting to own a MKV GTI but recently I've taken notice of GLIs. My wife has a MKV Jetta... I like it but its not fun. Many of the things I've read tonight talk about how much better balanced the GLI is and the performance difference is minimal for enthusiastic driving which is unexpected.

Personally I prefer a 2-door coupe but that's obviously not an option Utility is not a factor so don't ask about trunk vs hatch or 3 vs 4 vs 5 door. I'm looking for a fun daily driver that is visually pleasing.

Discuss...

Some visual aids:

The 5 door MkV GTI is on the short list of potential MINI-replacements for me. So I wanna hear what the masses gotta say.

I'd do the GLI vs the GTI if it were my money especially given your visual aids. For me longer bodied cars look sexy when low. The actual difference in length isn't much but the lines of the GLI make the car look quite a bit longer. weight isn't much different between the 5 door GTI and the GLI so performance and handling should be nearly identical really it comes down to style.

If I had to buy a VW today, this is the exact car I would go order.

I'm trying to get my mother out of her ****ty Pontiac Torrent and into one of these in the near future.

hell yeah if the TDI wagon is an option do it instead of the GLI.

R32 torque in half the time, sexy as hell if you slam it, and green (if that matters to ya).

I would say go for the GLI. I see GTI's, 3 and 5 doors, everyday. Maybe it's just my area but it seems like it's what ever one drives. I see a GLI maybe once a weeks.

do the gli if you need to get 4 doors. the 4 door gti looks weird to me... plus like will said, the gti's are a dime a dozen (at least in CT), you definitely do not see many nice modded gli's on the road.

I don't "need" 4 doors... something about it that I've never been a fan of. Maybe because it doesn't look "sporty". But that GLI in my first post is hot.

Something that has been nagging me and is part of the reason I've never looked at GLIs before... 200hp seems weak for a sedan. I had a 5th gen Maxima with 222hp and it seemed close to my MCS when it was stock. It almost seems like it would be a huge step back in the giggle factor. Time for some power to weight research.

well if you don't need the 4 doors, i can't say enough great things about the mk5 gti... with some good mods, it's fast as hell.

5th gen Maxima - 14.83 lb/hp
MKV GTI 2-door - 15.17 lb/hp
03 MCS (stock) - 16.43 lb/hp
MKV GLI - 16.45 lb/hp

Very interesting!

I'm looking for '06-'07 models for price. Though I really like the Audi Avant look the MKV Jetta wagon doesn't do much for me. But I appreciate the input
