Want to hear something funny? I still have this car, and am thinking about breathing new life into it again. Long story short: Cars with 188k miles on them tend to develop problems, sometimes right when you try to sell it. Selling a Miata late in the fall or early winter is a losing proposition, so I hung onto it with plans to fix it over the winter and sell it in the spring.

Well, since it's still around I'm thinking of other options. I found a wrecked 83k mile 2004 LS Miata that will be going up for auction soon. The front right corner is damaged, but the chassis and drivetrain looks to be untouched. So... this may be the plan if I can get my hands on it or a similar car:

Lower mileage chassis/engine/transmission/differential/etc. complete swap.

As you can see, on the Miata you can unbolt the chassis from the unibody and separate them completely. What I would want to do is to swap bodies onto the opposite chassis', putting the newly painted body onto the lower mileage chassis, and the wrecked body onto the high mileage chassis. I figure this would be the time to do some other updates like installing a poly bushing kit, some suspension pieces, and chassis braces. The end result would literally be like breathing new life into an older car.

I've debated if I'll continue with motorcycles or not, and may finish the CB750 build and sell off both bikes. Nothing is for sure there, but I feel much more comfortable with cars, and I figure this could become the perfect weekend track day car.

Just curious... How does the title paperwork / Vin. etc. look at this kind of thing if you plan on selling it at some point?

Good question, and one that I'm not sure of the answer to. Given that the vin is on parts of the unibody, I believe it doesn't change anything. I wouldn't change the odometer, so it's sort of like having a much more thorough engine replacement done... At least as far as I know so far.

If Miata's were a collector's car, it might lose some value for not "matching"....but I don't think the actual legal aspects of the VIN would be effected. It's basically just an engine swap and a crazy suspension rebuild.

I would just be careful of the crashed one being tweaked. There's most likely a reason beyond cosmetics that it was totaled out. I could see a corner hit tweaking that chassis a bit.

Valid point, but based on the damage I can see and knowing where the chassis points are I think this one (if it works out) would be a prime candidate. No airbags deployed, no glass broke... Good signs.

You just can't quit this thing. If you need a home for the XS400...

Though I did just see that they're putting those awesome Husqy concept bikes into production.

Seriously. The more I research this the more I think it'll happen. Now I just have to figure out what direction to take the car. It'll probably stay a street car that sees track days. Roll bar will obviously go back in now, with harnesses, better seats, better suspension, etc.

Welcome back to life, Miata.

I lost the bid on the Miata I was looking at, but I'm still looking into ways to make some progress with this car. It may take a few months, but expect to see some updates soon!
