Default A1 GP on TV

Quote:
A1 Grand Prix has announced a television deal with the cable network OLN in the US market. The TV package will begin immediately with OLN showcasing the earlier races from this season’s championship.

The next OLN A1 race will be Saturday, December 10, at 6 p.m. ET, when the network will feature the third round from Circuito Estoril in Portugal, where A1 Team USA placed fourth in this spectacular event. OLN will continue to televise the remaining races, culminating with the A1 Grand Prix of Nations in Shanghai, China on April 2, 2006.

The prospect of more than 60 million American fans being able to watch the A1 Grand Prix Series on national TV in the United States is something that A1 Team USA owner Rick Weidinger is excited about.

“This U.S. television deal enables us to introduce A1 Grand Prix and A1 Team USA to a larger and expanded audience. It is now time for Americans to be able to watch on television what the rest of the world has already embraced-the A1 Grand Prix of Nations,” said Weidinger. “If you are a race fan, it’s not hard to get excited about this format of nation versus nation and truly get enthused for the pride of your country. When people around America tune in to watch the A1 Grand Prix, they will be able to support the same team, A1 Team USA, no matter where they are from. It’s about patriotism, pride and entertainment all wrapped up into one dramatic competition. It is perfect for the American fan.”

Weidinger, who has paved the way for this exciting partnership, went on to add, “We are looking forward to the build up in the coverage package and viewership as we approach the race in the United States on March 19, 2006 at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. We hope to create a real home-field advantage for A1 Team USA when the series comes to our home with the 24 other represented nations."

Ah yeah, I remember reading about A1 GP. It's a really cool concept for a race series. Instead of the standard team/manufacturer set up, all teams use identical cars. Teams are assigned countries, like the Olympics, so you can root for your country instead of just a brand. I guess some Saudi prince organized and bankrolled the whole project.

Yup, and the first several races have been pretty good. The concept also allows any driver to be used at any given race...the possibilities are endless including putting a 'name' driver like MSchumacher or Raikkonen in the cars if the championship gets tight as long as their contracts allow, I suppose. I think it's great to have racing continue during the usual down months.

That's pretty crazy, allowing any driver to drop in at any time. I guess we'll have to see how that pans out in the real world.
