Default 2004 MCS Cat-Back Exhaust Overview

This is a tentative (always will be) overview of Cat-Back Exhausts available for the 2004 Mini Cooper S. If you have any other stores, exhausts, or general information you would like to add, please add a reply and I will add it to the data. Much of the exhausts and prices were sourced from a sticky on the NAM forums made by ABTSportsline; Thank you for everything, especially the hard to find sound/video clips. I have also noticied that a few exhausts that I am trying to research have either discontinued or I can't seem to find them, these include: UUC, M7, Cross, and NRP. Also, the Coast to Coast Titanium is currently out of stock.

Power Increase: 10 WHP and 10 FT-LBS above 4000 RPM (souce: Dyno Chart)
Piping: Single-sided, 2.5” Diameter, 2 Pieces Flanged
Material: 304 Stainless Steel, Chrome Plated Tips
Weight: 22lbs. (source:ABTSportline)
Description:
“The ALTA Performance™ exhaust system directs exhaust gases through large 2.5 inch diameter, high polish, stainless steel piping. Two strategically placed 2.5-inch in/out mufflers reduce the sound volume down to a low growl while the strait through design provides maximum airflow. The ALTA 2.5" exhaust is a single sided exhaust. This means that the 2.5" tube travels down the center of the car, and down one side, then out the center. This routing is simpler, lighter, and very clean looking. We choose to offset the system to the passenger side of the car, to help offset the weight of the driver. This small feature is something many of the weekend racers enjoy. Our Stainless Steel tip is not polished at all, in fact it is chrome plated! This keeps the tips from turning gold as the extreme heat from the system heats the tubing. Another small but very beneficial feature of the ALTA 2.5" exhaust.” - http://www.altaminiperformance.com

Genuine BORLA, see it, hear it, feel it … then you too will know why Winner’s Choose Borla!”
Part #140119 – “Aggressive” (Race)
Part #140120 – (Sport)
“Product Description Their cat-back exhaust features T-304 stainless steel construction, employs mandrel-bent tubing, all-welded construction, and is designed for accurate fit and easy installation. Warp-free 3/8"--1/2" thick flanges and special merge collector technology provide the ultimate in power and endurance.” – http://www.piloracing.com
“This system is similar in look to the Borla Street, but uses a 2.5" primary through a resonator right after the cat, then goes through two smaller mufflers (compared to the Street) to the same twin outlet as the Street. The sound is significantly louder than the Street, and compares to the volume level of the Magnaflow, albeit in a higher pitch. This system ties the Magnaflow in numbers - 10 hp - and weighs in at 33 lbs. It is still a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, but has lots of room for adjustment because of that.” – http://store.webbmotorsports.com
“Borla Performance Industries catalytic converter back T-304 stainless steel systems with dual round rolled angle-cut tips. Engineered for maximum power with a distinctive sound that signatures a Borla system. Systems include a full welded case high-flow muffler, mandrel bent tubing, and polished stainless steel tips. Complete hardware and instructions are also included. Very nicely built for a great fit. Multi part systems allows for easy install and control of fit. Two round meaty tips with 'BORLA' raised in the top of each pipe. Fills the rear valance perfectly. All Borla systems are backed by a one million mile warranty that covers every part of the systems including hardware. Borla reports a HP gain of 5 and 8 ft lbs Torque. Perfect fit for the MINI Cooper S.” – http://www.outmotoring.com
“The Borla "Street" exhaust is slightly louder than stock while providing better performance and feel. The "Street" version adds up to an estimated 5 hp, 8 lb/ft torque. The Borla “Sport”, sometimes referred to as the "Race" model is significantly louder than stock yet deep toned, aggressive and not tinny. The "Sport" version adds up to an estimated 9 hp, 8 lb/ft torque.” – http://www.coopersport.com
“We have installed and dyno tested just about every aftermarket cat-back system for the MCS. None have the fitment, quality construction, sound quality and power increase that the Borla has. We made three different prototypes of our own MCS exhaust, and none could compete with the Borla. We now proudly carry Borla.” – http://www.helix13.com
Installation Instructions:
http://borla.com/media/installations/140119.pdf
“Installation: Bolts on behind your vehicles catalytic converter and whenever possible utilizes the factory mounting locations. On systems that exit in a location other that factory, Borla includes hangers that bolt around the frame and require no drilling or welding. Borla Cat-Back Systems fit even better than OEM equipment in many cases. All parts you need to complete the installation are included and are also stainless steel. All you need are regular hand tools. Installation times range from twenty minutes to one hour depending on application and available resources.” – http://www.hopupracing.com

Piping: 2.5” Diameter pipe with center muffler/resonator, Single-Sided
Material: 304 Stainless Steel

Description:
“Mini Cooper S Stainless Steel Cat Back Exhaust. This system is completely polished 304 stainless steel. From the cat back it has a 2.5" diameter pipe with a center muffler/resonator and a single rear muffler. Twin tips are 2.75" diameter. Tip position is adjustable so you can be sure it will fit the factory opening. We designed this system with a single rear muffler because we feel a 1600cc engine does not need 2 rear mufflers, especially since we're using 2.5" tubing. I believe Dinan came to the same conclusion. This design works great, saves weight, is easier to install and maintain. Installation is easy as our system uses the factory hangers and bolts directly to the factory Cat. Please specify year of car” – https://secure5.nexternal.com/shared...t=products.asp

“Manufactured from 100% Stainless Steel and smoothed TIG welded for optimum strength and appearance.
Beauty and brawn! The Magnaflow exhaust doesn't just look good, it provides plenty of extra horsepower and torque, achieving some of the highest gains on the dyno of any aftermarket Cooper cat-back exhaust. Be forewarned though... with power comes growl. This is not a mellow, whisper-toned dragon. The Magnaflow sounds deep and wonderful but at a louder decibel than most MINI exhausts on the market.
Buy with confidence as Magnaflow backs their exhausts with a Lifetime Warranty.” – http://www.coopersport.com

Description:
“Developed on the dyno by Milltek Sport you have the best system we have ever seen for the Mini Cooper S. The smoothest flow possible, larger mufflers to keep the sound level down but flow up.A must for anyone serious about improving performance on their Mini Cooper S with a genuine UK-manufactured system. This is the system to have. This system (combined with the header) makes the most torque of any other system we have tested and as much power as all but the very loudest of systems. However, the Milltek exhaust makes a smooth sound combined with an east fit. Milltek Sport exhaust systems from Milltek are manufactured in the UK by the premier aftermarket exhaust manufacturer for Audi and VW automobiles. Milltek has significant experience in supplying exhaust components that perform while being civil at the same time. Milltek has the experience of producing superior systems for German-designed cars whilst also having the UK pedigree to deliver what a Mini Cooper owner would expect.” – http://www.minituner.com
“The unit comes off the cat at 2 1/2", into a resonator, out of the resonator 2 1/2", into a Y-collector at the rear of the car and into smaller 1 3/4" secondaries which join their own respective very small muffler cans and out again in the same diameter to two individual, center outlet, slash cut hand polished tips. The fit and finish of this system is excellent, and the install went quickly with no modifications for fit necessary. The 8 ft/lbs represent the highest torque numbers tested to date, and only a horsepower or so off the mighty Magnaflow. The power is greater across the entire rev range, with the biggest gain in horsepower being at the high end. The torque curve is higher across the range as well, with slightly lower rpm peak torque than stock. The sound of the system is probably the most exciting part about this exhaust over the others. It is a throatier sound without being louder. You read that right; it isn't loud. At WOT, it makes a good, sporty tone without being obnoxious. At highway cruise, my Alta intake makes more noise than the entire Milltek system.
31 lbs
8 ft/lbs of torque, 9 horsepower
This system will also fit all model years without modification.” - http://store.webbmotorsports.com/ind...products_id=25

yeayea man! I was thinking, hey, if stock SCCA solo allows cat-back exhaust, it'd be good to know what's the best out there right? So it was worthwhile at least to me, and i gotta share the info you know.

None yet hahaha still deciding.

My 3 choices would be ranked:
Magnaflow / Supersprint
Quicksilver

But each have their cons in my opnion. I don't like the sound of the Magnaflow, yet it has one of the highest power outputs, and Magnaflow is a generally respected exhaust company. The Supersprint looks amazing, but it has so many different pieces, and costs $1341 for the setup that has a high power output. The only pro of having different pieces is that you can easily switch out a straight pipe from a resonator pipe, if you had the extra cash lying around.

Again, I came up with my choices based on these priorities in this order:
1)Power increase
2)Weight savings
3)Known information/reviews on it
3)Sound
4)Price

With the first two being power and weight, the quicksilver should be on top, but not knowing any info on it, its price, and its sound, and not being reviewed at all made me skeptical. The weight was said to be 7 Kilos (15 lbs)!! But then again I don't even know if its passenger side mounted! Being UK Based what if they only made them left side mounted (passenger side to them)? I'll submit an email and try to find out more.

Default Response to Quicksilver Email

I recently wrote an email to Quicksilver with some questions:
Quote:
You wrote: Hi I had a couple of questions, those being:

1) How much total would it cost to buy a the SuperSports system 2x round cat-back 2004-06, being shipped to 91303 zip code in California, United States.

Second, if you have any sound clips I could listen to of the exhaust equipped on a MCS.

Third, if you have any pictures of your exhaust mounted onto a MCS, being in the US, I was basically wondering if you designed it to fit going around the left or right side of the car being single sided. It would always make sense to have it hang on the passenger side, but between the UK and the US its switched! Please give me information whenever you're available. Thank you.
They replied:
Quote:
Dear Edmond,
Thank you for your email.

We make a sport system from the ‘Cat’ for GBP 396.

Delivery to you adds GBP 80 and will take about 21 days.

We only have one system for both right and left hand drive cars our system
is so light that it makes absolutly no difference what side the box is on.

All QuickSilver systems and silencers are designed and manufactured
specifically for the model.

Our Standard systems are accurate replicas of the original exhaust to
ensure
the correct performance & sound - and all come with our Twenty Five Year
Corrosion Guarantee.

Please contact me directly with any further questions you may have.

Yours sincerely,
Ben Kaighin
He also posted a .mov of 2 drivebys and a .pdf file of the exhaust, but i'm not too sure how to post it.... can I email it to anyone to host them for me??
