Default Head Questions

When getting a new ported and polished head, is it necessary to get a new cam too, or is it just recommended to egt the most out of it, the reason why I ask, is I don't know if they do the head to the cam specs, or if any cam will work fine, though obviously a new cam would be better than the stock.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks

A cam is not nessisary...but it can help... a cam on a stock head doesn't get as much as it will on a ported head... but again... is not nessisary...

also it is easy to do a cam later... it's a much easier mod than the whole head...

My understanding is what Tuls stated. The head work is porting and polishing to increase flow so the air moves through the engine quicker. The cam is only responsible for controlling the valves (duration at which the intake and exhaust valves open and close). So you will get more performance increase if you upgrade both, but just one or the other will boost your power also, just not as much as if both are upgraded. The head will let more air in and through the engine faster, and the cam will let the valves open further and for a longer duration than stock letting more air into the combustion chambers. So even though the two work closely together, they really do not have a direct effect on each other (head will not affect the cam, and cam will not affect the head... but they both affect the engine in terms of conbustion).

Does that make sense?

Makes sense to me. That is what I was thinking too, just making sure I wasn't completely out of line.

Cool, I have been following thw water/meth injection threads and thought about it, but not going to do it anytime soon. The summer the soonest. Right now in the winter weather my MINI doesnt need to run any cooler. I drove like 100mph home from work one night in 36* weather and when I got home I decided to check the intercooler and it was really cold, on the hot side. Injectors and head would be the next step for me after a new Unichip but I really dont wanna spend the big bucks on those right now. Hell, my mods I do have arent even all installed on the car yet.

You dont know how tempting this is for me, although I need to resist. Need the witner car and pay off some credit card bills before I can think about a head.

We are seeing 19-25 WHP increase on pulley mod'd MCS's.. daily drivers..! It is also showing up that most mod'd MCS w/o a head will hang around 180-190 WHP, SOOOooooooo... if you are there.. it is the Head for 215 + WHP!!

Cam VS Adjustable Cam Gear...... hhmmmmm..... need to look into that, I would wait a while till more cams are available, it really is a lot of money for 7 HP gain.. IMHO. And the cam change after the head is pretty straight forward. cool??

Just me........................................
