ooooh 3% stretch is A LOT. not the best to work with for this scenario but doable. optimally you'd want a rigid fabric especially when you're working with a lined pattern. when it's stretchy and there are lines/plaids in the pattern any wobbles or misshaping of the fabric is emphasized due to the pattern itself.
don't get me wrong, it's definitely doable, just requires more care and patience when assembling and building out the patterns. |

+1 if you don't use twill you will regret it. plus laying a loose fabric like that will curve and bend making the pattern look like you did it... well... with crappy material

That one is sick...almost a tweed look for houndstooth.

Hmmm...well I'm not entirely feeling the houndstooth fabric and most of what I did find was pretty expensive ($50+ a yard!). I think I need about 3 yards, on the safe side, for the items I'm doing and would like to keep this under $40. Before my plaid idea I was going to do a black tweed...in fact I even have 2 yards of it in the attic. I want something a little different and eye catching though so that's why I want to go with the plaid.
I get what you guys are saying about the non-twill fabrics. I think I am just going to buy 1 yard of option B (about $6) and see what I can do with it. If it's hard to work with or I don't like it then I'm only out $6 and I'll have to find something else. I've been to all my local fabric stores with no luck in finding any good plaid designs so I think I may have to order it.

Have you checked back in the upholstery section of the fabric stores rather than the clothing/crafts? They're a little more expensive but the patterns are generally a bit better for car interiors and they're higher quality fabric meant to be used for this stuff

b then c
not that is makes any difference but... a plaid is the part of a full kilt that goes up and over the shoulder. The pattern of woven colors in the fabric is called a tartan. You have any scottish ancestry? if so do some research and go with a family tartan. I was thinking about this for my Golf but mine would have been this:
