Default The UnDedDub

So about six weeks ago, hot on the heels of H2Oi Nulli and I started looking for a MK1 VW. We had seen a handful of cars in our local area but none that quite struck a chord with us. Then I ventured onto one of the local VW forums just to see if there was anything that wasn't listed on the bigger sites. Lo and behold there was the one that got away...

Little back story here. Mid summer or so we had talked to an acquaintance of Drew's about trying to buy his Cabby. It was a 1988 Cabriolet that was his daily driver to not put to much wear on his Beetle. At that time he didn't want to sell. The Friday during H2O he posted it up. At less than we were gonna pay him the first time around. Needless to say we met up with him the next day (10/1/09 we took delivery) and went ahead and bought a cool little knock around car.

A little more story on the car itself and the reason for the name. The Cabby met it's demise earlier in the year when the previous owner had the unfortunate experience of hitting a deer. Due to the age and value of a 1988 Cabrio, insurance considered the car a total loss. The damage wasn't really that bad though, just more than 25% of the value of a 21 year old car. So the previous owner had a local VW witch Doctor bring him back to life. We decided to kind of embrace that and try to bring the Dub fully back to the land of the living.

Here's the specs according to the research we've done.

1988 VW Golf Cabriolet Azur - Only 250 Produced
Canadian Euro Spec - The Speedometer is in Kilometers Odometer works when it wants to...
Light Blue Metallic Paint - Paint code since I've got it handy: LD5U
5-Speed
1.8 Liter 8V engine 95 hp
The interior is a Blue Plaid fabric specific to this model
Top was originally Dark Blue Vinyl. Ours had been dyed black. This is being restored to Dark Blue Canvas this week.
14"x 6" et38 (it's stamped on the outside of the wheel ) Helios Blue, Avus "Snowflake" Wheels
Heated Seats
No A/C
No Power Steering

The previous owner(s) had done a few mods here and there. Some will be removed, some saved.

Smoked reflectors and taillights - already removed in these pics except the front turn signals. Gotta buy new ones...
Yellow Painted Foglights
Black Front Emblem
Custom Wood Laminate Floor in Trunk - Pic forthcoming...
Steering Wheel cover
Kilo to Miles conversion cheat sheet
Pioneer Head Unit that thankfully has an input for an iPod.
Eibach (we think) lowering springs
Wunder VW Euro Plate - Turned backwards in the pics since it didn't really have meaning to us and there's holes in the bumper so we can't just remove it.

Current Status:
13x8 Rota RB's
215/50/13 tires
Raceland Coilovers
Golf Ball shiftknob
Single headlamp front grill
E-code headlights
Chrome line body trim
OEM gas cap

On to some pics! These were taken by the Lovely and talented Nulli!

Nice Cabrio! I had one back in college, kinda wish I still had it. Roof never leaked, but the floorboards did

Can't wait to see what you guys do w/ it.

I love the cheat sheet for Mi to Km conversion. Every time my wife gets pulled over for speeding in the classic, she plays dumb and says "oh, you just don't just divide the Km/h by 2 to get mp/h?"... Hasn't got a ticket yet

Congrats!

Nik

awwwwww yeah!!! i'm lovin undeddub! the color is absolutely amazing, i don't think i've ever seen it...

are you guys getting a whole new ragtop for it? i wouldn't recommend a diy on this, it looks like a PITA and the guy who did ours did it, but then failed to put the window in... so we have no back window.

also, love that you are getting rid of the smoked tails. we have a lot of work to do on ours to get it back from being murdered.... the two fenders were rattlecanned and the rest of the car is glossy. we got all new tails, lights, and emblems though... (i still need to do my thread!!!).

oh, and i have a good parts website for you, i need to get it from nick though and he is currently on his way to england... you obviously already know about the mk1 forum.

It's weird to be rolling down the highway at 120.

Did you ever figure out how where the floorboard leak came from? I'm afraid we may have a similar issue.

Mine was an 84, but probably not much different than the 88. If I remember correctly the clutch and the gas peddles were both cables. I think that the grommet going thru the firewall needed to be replaced. Being a poor college student living in Ca (where it rarely rains) I never followed up on fixing it.

Don't be too jealous. The passenger one is stuck in the ON position. Off switch seems broken so we can't figure out how to turn it off haha. Gets bloody hot!

Thanks guys! Nulli and I can't wait to get crackin' on this thing. It's such a cool little car.
